A Worth-While EndeavorAs educators, we strive to provide worthwhile and meaningful experiences for our students. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, these experiences can be brushed over either with disinterest or over-excitement.
This Unit is designed to take a simple field trip and create a meaningful experience for the student and teacher. Students will be doing research to create their own multimodal learning resource about an artist. With this information, students will educate their peers at a class field trip to a local museum. Students will learn about the Wyeth Family by researching, note-taking, evaluating sources, and creating their own Multimodal Learning Resources. With these they will be able to teach their peers about these local artists, create pieces inspired by them, and finally summarize their experience. |
Multimodal Texts
Multimodal Texts are any resources that include two or more modes of communication. This includes picture books (text plus pictures), websites (text plus media), video podcasts (video plus sound), the list goes on. We use multimodal texts as teachers to help enhance students' learning experiences, differentiate instruction, and peak the interests of our students.
This website acts as a multimodal resource for the research and learning about the Wyeth Family. This is a teacher created multimodal resource for the enhancement of student learning.
More importantly, this resource, and the purpose of this unit, is to provide students with the necessary tools to create their own resources. In creating their own multimodal resources, students will be able to make personal connections, build background knowledge, and utilize their own strengths in becoming experts on this topic. Students will create their own learning resources for the enhancement of personal and peer learning.

Why Technology is So ImportantThis Unit is designed to be primarily an English Language Arts experience. In literacy education today, New Literacies are new forms of being able to read, write and communicate made possible by digital technologies. Teachers are expected to incorporate new literacies into their teaching and instruction in meaningful and engaging ways.
In an effort to utilize these new literacies in a way that helps both the teacher and student engage in the new literacies and the content, information below reflects the TPACK underlying this unit. Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) is a framework developed by Mishra & Koehler to showcase teachers’ knowledge about how to best match technology, pedagogy, and content. For more information about TPACK, visit Jenny Luca's site at the link below: |
